Apple just unveiled the new line of AirPods at today’s keynote. The AirPods 4 comes in two variants, one with active noise cancelation (ANC) and the other without. Other than ANC, Apple has also added better Siri interactions, USB-C and wireless charging support, and new listening modes.
The fourth generation AirPods has a more comfortable fit now thanks to Apple’s extensive analysis of ear shapes using millions of data points. But the big highlight this year is the Active Noise Cancelation, which works with Personalized Spatial Audio mode to create a more immersive listening experience. Personalized Spatial Audio gives you the illusion that the sound is coming from all around you.
There’s a selective Transparency Mode too, that lets the environment in for when you need to be aware of your surroundings. Depending on the environment (whether it’s quiet or loud), AirPods 4 can automatically switch between different listening modes. These earphones also automatically lower the playback volume when you begin speaking, so you can have a conversation, and automatically bring the volume back up when you stop talking.
For better hands-free control, you can now interact with Siri just by moving your head— nod for “yes” and shake for “no.” Apple has included a Voice Isolation feature that removes background noise to keep your calls crystal clear. You can also control calls and playback using the force sensor on the AirPod stem.
Combined with the charging case, the AirPods offer 30 hours of battery life (the same as last year). However, it’s now USB-C compatible and comes with wireless charging support. And Apple has integrated a speaker into the charging case.
It’s all powered by Apple’s new H2 chip that brings improvements in audio quality. Apple promises “richer bass” and “crystal-clear highs.” Apple AirPods 4 starts from $129, with the Active Noise Cancellation model priced at $179. You’ll be able to buy a pair from Apple’s website and third-party retailers.
