- We shine the spotlight on another lesser-known game with Hexagon Auto Battle
- It’s a simple hex-crawling roguelike where you build a party throughout each run
- Choose from a variety of different classes and take on the dungeon
When it comes to roguelikes, I think that when you strip it down to its barest essence it’s quite an interesting genre. It’s meant to hit on the same experience of early miniatures and RPGs, where a total party wipe was expected. And in today’s subject, Hexagon Auto Battle, you get the simpler side of things while still being able to build your party to deal with each threat that arises.
In Hexagon Auto Battle, you build a party out of classic fantasy classes, like the fighter, healer, and archer. You then lay out your party on a hexagon-shaped battlefield and watch the fun commence as they duke it out with hordes of enemies.
Despite it being simple, there are a few quirks, like a Backpack Hero-style puzzle inventory and a variety of game modes including Wave, Versus and Boss Battle. And while the graphics may be simple they do manage to communicate that quaint D&D-ish vibe.
Dungeon crawlingHexagon Auto Battle does what I think any game should do when it’s working with a limited genre, and adds some neat little additions. It’s free-to-play, however, so you may have to contend with some ads, but otherwise, it’s a reasonably well-accomplished-looking game. I was especially, pleasantly, surprised they added something cribbed from Backpack Hero too.
You can find Hexagon Auto Battle on the Google Play store right now. In the meantime, if you’re looking for other great games to play there’s no better list to peruse than our definitive ranking of the best mobile games of 2024 (so far)!
