- Matchday Champions is a new collectible football card game on mobile
- It’s available worldwide, with a kick-off event hosted by a well-known footballer and influencer
- The game boasts its own narrative-creation engine to differentiate matches
It’s hard to replicate the thrills and spills of a well-played football match. But developer Matchday seems to think they’ve cracked it with their newest effort, Matchday Champions. Out now on iOS and Android, this collectible card game involves the usual rigmarole of collecting and battling your favourite footballers, but with a twist.
Essentially, you collect your cards from a selection of famous male and female footballers, build your squad and send the starting 11 out onto the pitch. From there, Matchday’s own proprietary narrative-creation engine is supposed to replicate the highs and lows of a real match. And while we don’t yet know how well it works, it’s certainly a bold idea.
To mark the release of the game, a special tournament hosted by Spanish football World Cup Champion Alexia Putellas and Belgian influencer Celine Dept will encourage players to pick their team between this pair and duke it out in virtual tournaments for both bragging rights and unique prizes.
That’s liquid football
Personally speaking, I do think the idea of a narrative-creation engine is a bit odd. I don’t necessarily smell AI on the wind, but I’ll be a bit sceptical of how well it can replicate real football matches without breaking down into a series of bullet-points Football Simulator style. But if you want to try it out for yourself you can find Matchday Champions now on the iOS App Store and Google Play.
