Once Ginger Island was added to Stardew Valley in the 1.5 expansion, a bunch of new quests became available, as well as new NPCs and stories. Birdie’s quest, or rather, the Pirate’s Wife quest is one of them, and to complete it without any help, you should know some of the game’s dialogues/characters.
The Pirate’s Wife quest is unlike any other quest in Stardew Valley – you typically have to bring Leeks to George or something like that. Basically, most quests ask you to deliver an item to someone, and that’s it. With this quest, you have a full-fledged RPG questline, where you’re taken back and forth between NPCs, then tasked to deliver items and get others in return until you pretty much finish the quest.
Below I’ll explain what it is all about, and how you can complete The Pirate’s Wife quest and get your hands on those Golden Walnuts.
Who is the pirate’s wife?
If you’ve ever set foot on Ginger Island, you might have noticed on the lefthand side of the map a little hut, next to which an old raggedy woman is sitting – just fishing, staring in the distance. That’s Birdy, an NPC that is also called the pirate’s wife due to the questline that she spawns once you start a chat.
How to complete the Pirate’s Wife quest?
After chatting with Birdy, she will ask you for a little favour – finding something that belonged to her husband and could remind her of him. It sounds like a sweet quest, but if you haven’t completed it yet, then you probably know it’s not as easy as it seems.
Here are all the steps you have to do when taking this quest, and how you can solve it:
1. Hand in the War Memento to Kent
The War Memento, basically a war photo, is the first item in this quest chain. You have to hand it in to someone who knows about the war, and the only one in the Valley who can do that is Kent. He will be available starting Year 2, and he lives with Jodi, Sam and Vincent.
2. Pass the Gourmet Tomato Salt to Gus at the Saloon
After talking to Kent, you will get a Gourmet Tomato Salt – this item’s description reads as follows: “A rare, delicious and savoury salt”. The only person known for their cooking in the Valley is Gus, so you need to head over there and hand the salt over to him. In return, he will give you a Stardew Valley Rose.
3. Take the bus to Calico Desert and give the Rose to Sandy
Guessing that the Rose is for Sandy can be a little tricky, but since she is an NPC in Stardew who absolutely loves flowers (and Mango Sticky Rice?), it has to be done. She is going to love the rose, and in return, she will give you an item that’s not so popular in her store: a TV remote.
4. Give George the TV remote so he can finally change channels
We know that George can be a little grumpy unless he gets his Leeks, but he is also going to love having the Advanced TV Remote you get from Sandy. He will now be able to switch channels (finally!) and in return, you’ll get an Arctic Shard.
5. Head over to the Wizard with the Arctic Shard
Since the Arctic Shard is a mysterious item glowing with an otherworldly blue light, the Wizard is the best NPC to take it to. Once you hand over the item, he will give you a Wriggling Worm. I think you can guess where you need to take this item.
6. Give Willy the fisherman the Wriggling Worm
Any old fisherman loves a good bait, and a Wriggling Worm is the best there is. Hand the item over to Willy, and he will finally give you the final item on this quest line.
7. Finally, head back to Birdy with the Pirate’s Locket obtained from Willy
The last item you will get on this quest is the Pirate’s Locket, which is the item Birdy was looking for. Go back to Ginger Island with it, and she will give you 5 Golden Walnuts and a recipe for Fairy Dust.
The reward
When you finish the quest, Birdy will give you the recipe to craft Fairy Dust, as well as 5 Golden Walnuts. Since the Golden Walnuts are pretty scarce and there are a maximum of 130 you can collect in total, you want to complete this quest and get all of them.
