A decade of tower defending and cat battling is indeed cause for celebration – the only problem is that the festivities for the 10th anniversary of The Battle Cats seem to have hit a wall. The popular tower defence game is now tasking you to find the evil Spy Cat who’s behind all the shifty shenanigans of the in-game festival, adding another ridiculously intriguing element to the already wonderfully ridiculous title.
For the 10th-anniversary celebrations within The Battle Cats, you can look forward to uncovering a conspiracy involving a time-travelling cat, a tranquillizer dart, and a pirate cat delivering breaking “mews”.
It’s all very meta and adds to the fun, as even the tower defence’s parent company PONOS has issued a so-called official statement that goes, “We’re launching a thorough investigation to find the perpetrator. In the meantime, we’re working around the clock to fix the machines.”
That said, the meta-ness of the festivities is, of course, a deliberate campaign from the devs. “There is a great irony in the gaming world: while games are meant to entertain us, their promotions and celebrations typically fall back on the same retail tactics and sales clichés. But why not extend the entertainment into the promotions and celebrations themselves?” says Ari Halper, Global Head of Creative Excellence at R/GA.
