Apple just added a new subscription mechanism to the App Store which displays offers from apps you previously subscribed to. It’s Apple’s way of giving app and game developers a chance to win you back.
You’ll see these win-back offers under “Events & Offers” cards sprinkled across the App Store. “Based on your offer configuration, Apple displays these offers to eligible customers in various places, including: across the App Store, including on your product page, as well as in personalized recommendations and editorial selections on the Today, Games, and Apps tabs,” the announcement explained. The cards have a “special offer” tag along with a quick description of the offer, the app’s name, and a handy “subscribe” button. Tapping “subscribe” installs the app and seamlessly subscribes you to the offer. Or you can tap the card to learn more about it.
For freemium apps, these offers could appear within the app interface. You might also find similar offer sheets in your Apple account settings under the Subscriptions tab. If you’re still subscribed to the app’s mailing list, you might even receive an email link to redeem the “win-back” offer. Apple’s marketing images for the feature suggest that these offers will be limited-time only.
If you unsubscribed from an app or game recently, you might get an offer to renew that same plan at a discounted price (or for free with an extended trial). “For example, you can create a pay up front offer for a reduced subscription price of $9.99 for six months, with a standard renewal price of $39.99 per year,” Apple told developers. Apple also said that you’ll start seeing win-back promotions this fall.
Google has a similar mechanism for Android apps in the Google Play Store, called “winback” offers, so Apple isn’t the first to this strategy. Android apps can push notifications with win-back offers after you’ve canceled your subscription. Similar win-back offers also show up in the Google Play Store.
